If you received the $ 600 amount of the second stimulus check which has already started to be distributed by the IRS and the Treasury Department, but not the additional credits for dependents, you will most likely have to request the extra funds on the tax return you file this year.
Both Americans eligible to receive the check for $ 600 who do not receive it, as well as those who obtain the amount per individual, but not the $ 600 for each minor dependent by January 15, will have to carry out additional procedures with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the payment to be processed.
January 15 is the date established by the Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Allocations Act of 2021 for the relevant agencies to complete the distribution of most of the “Economic Impact Payments”.
Recipients who, for that period of time, have not received the incentive or only part of it, either by direct deposit, paper check or prepaid debit card, must claim the debt from the IRS through the “Refund Recovery Credit”.
This option is a temporary solution for the IRS to try to ensure that everyone who is creditor of the checks receives their due amount.
People who did not receive the money from the first round of $ 1,200 provided under the CARES law or the IRS disbursed a lower amount than the corresponding amount may also request the money owed through the tax credit.
During the process of distributing the first stimulus checks, the IRS enabled the “Non-filers” tool to collect information from eligible Americans for whom the agency did not have data to process the payment.
The service was available until November 21.
But, at the moment, the entity has not indicated whether it will reactivate that online alternative for the second round as a complement to the “Reimbursement recovery credit”.
