The Darts World Cup started the new year with a sensation. Superstar Michael van Gerwen was eliminated in the quarterfinals with a whitewash. The number one was defeated by a furious playing Dave Chisnall with 0: 5.
It’s the worst loss of his career. Not only was he eliminated from the Darts World Championship, the hope of the fourth world title had to be buried and the top of the world rankings on Sunday after seven years – the 5-0 defeat against Dave Chsinall was a humiliation.
The Englishman played as if in a frenzy, losing his serve right at the beginning, but broke back and then checked 141 to 2: 1 and 95 to win the set. A disrespectful start, which, given the balance sheet, could not be taken for granted. He hadn’t beaten the Dutchman in 27 games, most recently in February 2016.
The Englishman then won the fourth and fifth legs in a row, but then gave four set darts and had to go through the decider to get the 2-0 set lead he deserved. His average had dropped to double due to the mistakes, but was still 107.85, while van Gerwen started with a 98.26.
At the beginning of the third set, Chisnall also set an example when he checked 114 to make it 1-0, van Gerwen broke to make it 2-0 and had two set darts. Instead, the number one in the world checked 150 points, fought his way back into the decider to once again test Chisnall’s nerve strength: 3-0 for the outsider.
“Chizzy” rushed through the match, broke directly to make it 1-0 and was quickly two legs ahead. van Gerwen shortened to 1: 2, then played five perfect darts, but Chisnall eight and missed the nine-darter by just a few millimeters: 4: 0 for Chisnall, who was still with a throwing average of 105.

The Englishman started round five with a 130 checkout via the Bullseye, which won the set 3-1. The 80s checkout was the final point for Chisnall, who landed on an average of 107.34 and will now meet Gary Anderson in the semifinals on Saturday. Van Gerwen, on the other hand, is not in the semi-finals for the first time since 2016.
Anderson and Stpehen Bunting had already made it into the semifinals with clear victories in the afternoon.
