Samsung reportedly released its own Tile-type bluetooth tracker

Along with the Galaxy S21, S21 +, and S21 Ultra, it looks like Samsung may also be considering launching a Tile-like Bluetooth tracking device in early January.

Similar to Tile’s trackers and Apple’s oft-rumored AirTags, the Galaxy SmartTag reportedly uses Bluetooth to connect to nearby devices, according to 91mobiles. Like other trackers, the SmartTag has a hole that allows it to easily attach to a set of keys.

According to a regulatory dossier first discovered by GSMArena, the Galaxy SmartTag is powered by a standard button cell battery, which means you can replace the battery when it dies. While Tile’s newer trackers, such as the Tile Pro and Tile Mate, have interchangeable batteries, the company’s older devices had to be fully replaced after their battery died.

However, it’s unclear whether Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag is anything other than a standard Bluetooth tracker.

For example, in addition to Bluetooth connectivity, Apple’s Airtags would also feature Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, allowing the accessory to more accurately pinpoint its location when communicating with other devices with UWB technology.

In October, Samsung launched an app that aims to help people better track their gadgets over Bluetooth, likely laying the groundwork for the SmartTag. A render of the tracker also appeared briefly in Samsung’s SmartThings app recently.
