There are several artists who, after reaching the top and accumulating millionaire sums in their bank accounts, have fallen into bankruptcy. Some could not recover, others after years of tireless struggle managed to pay off their debts and stay afloat. On this occasion we will name the 5 artists who went from luxury to misery in a matter of months.
5) Mike Tyson
The most famous boxer of recent times. By the beginning of the year 2000, Tyson accumulated a fortune of more than 400 million euros, as easy as it is said he managed to disappear that money.
“As a professional boxer who relied on others to run his affairs, he has found that his debts exceeded his income,” Tyson’s attorney Debra Grassgreen explained in 2003. In that year, when the athlete was only 37 years old, he declared bankruptcy and brushed against poverty very closely. Experts pointed out that the years he was imprisoned, a divorce, an eccentric life, parties and excesses were the main causes of his failure.
4) Cyndi Lauper
The 1980s star rose to the top of stardom and almost immediately descended underground. By 1981, it had already filed for bankruptcy. One decision that was a blunder, was the fact that Lauper took the path of the band, instead of going to stardom alone. In those years, she was part of Blue Angel, a band of which she was a leader and that left her with serious financial problems.
Other bad decisions, such as the firing of her manager, led to total failure. Massarsky, the manager, sued Blue Angel for almost 70,000 euros. There Lauper declared bankruptcy, however he was able to stay afloat thanks to his theme Girls just wanna have fun (1983), but the hot streak didn’t last long, she would soon lose her voice due to a cyst on the vocal cords and fell again.
3) 50 Cent
Third on the list is held by controversial rapper 50 Cent. In 2015, he filed for bankruptcy after his debts nearly doubled his total assets and income. His fortune was valued at 412 million euros, the diversification of his career led him to accumulate more money. However, for many, 50 Cent’s temperament was not at all favorable for business.
In 2011 he started a new business project with the Sleek Audio company. His rebellion cost him a lawsuit, since he could not understand with the company and it was against the contract, 50 Cent wanted to produce headphones. The breach of the contract cost him 14 million euros.
At that time it became official: 50 Cent had a claim for more than 7 million euros. His assets at that time amounted to 16 million euros, but the debts he already brought with him were for almost 30 million.
2) Francis Ford Coppola
Another face who did not know how to handle his money was writer and producer Francis Ford Coppola. The latter is recognized worldwide for the direction and production of The Godfather, which was his master letter to get out of the large debts that he had been accumulating. That is why it is said that he only acted as producer and director not because of extreme talent, but to avoid hiring more staff and completely bankrupt.
Without much faith, Coppola thought that The Godfather would be one more film, but it gave him the boost he needed to get out of the economic gap he was in, although there are no official figures. The Godfather also earned him five Oscars.
1) Nicolas Cage
Finally we close the luxury count to a sad economic outcome with the case of Nicolás Cage. Marked by bad investments, he buried a fortune of 12 million euros and, although he remains afloat, he never managed to recover them again. The main cause of his bankruptcy was investing in 15 properties that quickly lost value. In addition, his eccentric whims, among which there is a dinosaur skull and also exotic animals, were decreasing the money in his account.
