Brazilian right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday criticized Argentina’s decision to legalize abortion, describing the matter as giving a country “its consent” to the killing of children.
The leader of the largest Catholic country in the world said in a tweet, “I feel deeply sorry for the lives of Argentine children, who are now liable to be removed from their mothers’ womb with the state’s consent.”
On Wednesday, Argentina became one of the few countries in Latin America to legalize abortion, following the passage of a bill that deeply divided public opinion.
The Senate approved the law with a majority of 38 votes in exchange for 29 rejections and one abstention, two years after the fall of the first attempt that had in turn sparked a division in society.
Several thousand pro-abortion activists near Congress headquarters celebrated the vote.
In Argentina, abortion was permitted so far only in cases of rape or under threat to the mother’s life, according to a law dating back to 1921.
