Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The World Health Organization (WHO) finally approved the emergency use of the US and Germany’s corona (Covid-19) vaccine, Pfizer / BioNTech. This is the first ’emergency validation’ that the UN agency has given the existing coronavirus vaccine since the virus broke out in December 2019.
“This is a very positive step to ensure global access to the Covid-19 vaccine,” said top WHO official Mariangela Simao quoted by AFP, Friday (1/1/2021).
“But I want to emphasize the need for a greater global effort to achieve sufficient vaccine supplies to meet the needs of priority populations everywhere.”
WHO brought together experts and researchers from around the world to review the safety and efficacy and quality of Pfizer / BioNTech. The benefits and risks are also weighed.
“The study found that the vaccine meets the must-have criteria for safety and efficacy set by WHO, and that the benefits of using the vaccine are to address the potential risks of Covid-19,” he said.
This WHO move paved the way for regulators to approve vaccine imports and distributions. Later UNICEF, the UN agency that focuses on child welfare will also play a role in the distribution of this vaccine.
