As of Wednesday afternoon, a total of 1,9643,688 infections and 340,397 deaths have been reported since February 2020 in the country, according to the independent count from NBC News.
December has been the most difficult month, with the most infections and deaths, for the United States since the coronavirus epidemic began in February.
According to figures from NBC News, as of December 28, there were 5,629,318 new cases of COVID-19 and 65,212 deaths. November was the second month with the most infections (4,389,678 infections and 23,341 deaths).
Health officials have warned that the December vacation could trigger more cases of the coronavirus, as several cities face a limit on hospital capacity.

Tuesday, December 22: The United States reported 3,350 coronavirus-related deaths, according to an NBC News tally.
Friday, December 18: NBC News confirmed another one-day record of COVID-19 cases in the United States, with at least 246,914.
Thursday, December 17: The United States reported 243,645 cases, setting a record for the second day in a row, according to an NBC News tally. 3,288 deaths were also recorded, five less than Wednesday’s tally.
Wednesday, December 16: NBC News confirmed that the United States hit new records in a single day, with 232,086 cases and 3,293 deaths from COVID-19.
Thursday, December 10: According to an NBC News tally, 229,928 new cases of coronavirus and more than 3,110 deaths have been reported in the United States in a single day.
STATES MOST AFFECTED BY CORONAVIRUS
California records 2,243,285 infections and 24,993 deaths, while Texas has reported 1,736,031 coronavirus cases and 27,495 deaths. Florida follows with 1,292,252 people infected and 21,717 deaths, according to the NBC News tally.
Illinois, for its part, is fourth in number of cases with 955,380 infections and 17,811 deaths.
Fifth place is occupied by New York, with 951,690 infections, as it continues to be the state with the most deaths, with a total of 38,483.
