a jewel of romance under heavy rainfall

Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning struggle to enjoy a romantic getaway in A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK, Woody Allen’s latest film. Which does not prevent this comedy from being a little gem of romanticism …

After the bitterness, the good humor

Woody Allen’s recent feature films aren’t his most optimistic. In MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT, L’HOMME IRRATIONNEL, CAFÉ SOCIETY or WONDER WHEEL, the filmmaker films sentimental cataclysms that sometimes end very badly. The director had to find Manhattan so that gaiety finally reappears fully in his story, as was the case in WHATEVER WORKS.

Despite the controversies and accusations against him, the director shows a rare detachment in A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK, shot in 2017 and deprived of a release in the United States. An indifference that goes through the main character played by the brilliant Timothée Chalamet, perfect as a student from Yardley who prefers to bet big in poker instead of revising. In a relationship with Elle Fanning, he decides to accompany her to New York when she has to interview a tortured filmmaker for the Yardley University gazette. The young man dreams of making him discover his favorite places in his favorite city.

But during this escapade, the apprentice journalist finds himself embroiled in gruesome adventures involving several stars, played by Liev Schreiber, Jude Law and Diego Luna. As the day progresses, the reunion between the two lovebirds seems more and more compromised …

When rain rhymes with love

The rain comes after the good weather in the film, but it is not necessarily synonymous with sadness, quite the contrary. The more foggy the windows of New York buildings are, the lighter the tone becomes in this homage to the comedies of the Golden Age of Hollywood. In the cinema, romanticism is expressed much better under the drops, as recalled by the adorable tandem formed by Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez, an old acquaintance of the hero who pinched for him as a teenager.

In this autumnal atmosphere, their tender eyes are part of an old tradition of the seventh art. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers contributed in particular with LE DANSEUR DU DESSUS, by declaring their love under a kiosk protecting them from a downpour. Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard are not afraid to get wet in the cult finale of DIAMONDS ON CANAPÉ, where the iconic MOON RIVER tune embellishes their languid kiss on a Manhattan street.

Moreover, it is not only in the city that love can blossom or strengthen under a torrent. Woody Allen has already demonstrated this in the English countryside with MATCH POINT, while Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep bid each other heartbreaking goodbyes in ON THE ROAD TO MADISON. In NEVER FORGET, the emotional climax is obviously the reunion on a lake between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Finally, the enigmatic Darcy makes her marriage proposal soaked to Elizabeth in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, the sublime adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel worn by Keira Knightley.

CHILDREN’S GAMES, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A BURIAL or LET’S SING IN THE RAIN also prove that precipitation and declarations go hand in hand. A list in which A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK now takes pride of place.
