The ‘British variant’, so called because the mutation was first identified in Great Britain, is more contagious than other versions of the coronavirus. At least eleven people in the Netherlands have contracted the variant, but the actual number could well be higher. The higher contagiousness may mean that the number of new cases will remain high for the time being, which could have consequences for the already sky-high pressure on hospitals.
The meeting agenda has not been disclosed, so it is not clear what else will be discussed. It is also not known who will attend the meeting. The OMT may also talk about the pressure on nursing and care homes. Groningen, Twente and North and East Gelderland have asked for help from the army to prevent the elderly from being able to receive even minimal care, such as washing and administering medicines.
