According to a recently published patent application, Apple is investigating a keyboard with small displays embedded in each key. The essence of this innovation is to dynamically change the symbols on the buttons depending on the situation or the text input language used.

The patent suggests that such a keyboard can be released as a separate device or used in laptops. Each button is said to contain a small OLED display to display characters. Glass, ceramics, polymer and even crystalline materials such as sapphire can be used as the material for the keys.

The patent emphasizes that such a keyboard will be able to display characters for different languages, as well as designations corresponding to certain actions in the game and other necessary characters. In addition, letters will be displayed on the keys in a case-sensitive manner. It is important to note that the technology described in the patent does not interfere with the operation of the dome and scissor switches of physical keyboards in any way, which makes the idea not so fantastic.

Although this is just a patent, there is every reason to believe that Apple will try to implement it in real devices in the near future, as the new technology looks like a logical continuation of the Touch Bar already used in the MacBook Pro.
