Church dispute: Supreme Court verdict final, Orthodox faction tightens its grip on Modi

Delhi: Orthodox Church representatives say there is no solution to the church dispute beyond the Supreme Court ruling. The response came after a meeting with the Prime Minister. Church members are touting the judge’s response to her involvment with the church together with his decision as religious discrimination, and the church is examining the situation. Delegates wrote to the Prime Minister asking the House to implement the Supreme Court ruling.

The discussion with the Orthodox delegation was part of the Prime Minister’s meeting with various Christian churches. Modi seeks consensus on Mizoram Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai’s Orthodox-Jacobite reconciliation. The Prime Minister had a half-hour meeting with the House representatives.

House representatives said they had requested the Prime Minister to implement the Supreme Court judgment. After the discussion, the church representatives told the media that the Jacobite Church should respect the Supreme Court’s decision, citing the participation of the Waqf Board in approving the Ayodhya verdict.

Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will meet with representatives of the Jacobite Church. Meanwhile, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal has accused the BJP of trying to fish in troubled waters. The Prime Minister will also meet representatives of the Catholic Church next week.

The BJP reckons that if a consensus is reached on the contentious issue in Central Kerala before the forthcoming Assembly elections, it will win the elections as well. As a part of it, the BJP is moving ahead with the intervention of PS Sreedharan Pillai by directly fielding the Prime Minister himself.
