Curfew on New Year’s Eve: timetables and rules in force throughout Italy

As we now know, with the Christmas decree the Government has established the application throughout the national territory of the measures envisaged for red and orange areas for the period between 24 December 2020 and 6 January 2021, with a differentiation according to the days considered most at risk for potential travel and social occasions.

From 24 December to 6 January Italy was so “colorful”:

  • red days: 24, 25, 26, 27 and 31 December 2020 and 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 January 2021;
  • orange days: 28, 29 and 30 December 2020 and 4 January 2021.

Throughout the Christmas holidays, the curfew throughout the beautiful country: that is, it is forbidden to move throughout the Italian territory from 10pm to 5am.

And on New Year’s Eve? For 31 December, the Conte government has decided to extend the duration of the curfew by 2 hours to avoid celebrations and possible festive occasions, which would bring together more people with serious risks of Covid infections in the same place. We remind you that on holidays and days before holidays (24, 25, 26, 27 and 31 December and 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 January) it is possible, once a day, to travel to visit relatives or friends, even to other Municipalities, but always and only within the same Region, between 5 and 22 and up to a maximum of two people.

The person or two people who move can still bring with them children under 14 (or other children under 14 over whom the same people exercise parental authority) and disabled or non self-sufficient people who live with them.

When you can visit friends and family

Many Italians are wondering if, in the event that one goes to the home of relatives or friends, in compliance with the limits and times established by the law, one must still respect the curfew or one can return to one’s residence, domicile or home in any moment.

The return home after visiting friends or relatives must always take place between 5 and 22 (on 1 January 2021 between 7 and 22), on both red and orange days.

The reasons that justify the movements between 10 pm and 5 am remain exclusively those of work, necessity or health. Assistance to non self-sufficient people is also among the reasons for need. In all these cases it is necessary to show the self-certification form (you can download it who).
