Today (December 29th, 2020) officials of the Central Criminal Inspectorate in Osnabrück in Emsland and in the county of Bentheim searched the homes of four members of the Osnabrück Police Department, following a judicial decision by the Osnabrück Administrative Court. The investigators secured items of evidence, which are now being evaluated in the context of official and disciplinary investigations.

According to current knowledge, there is a suspicion that the police officers – these are three active officers and a retired police officer – have exchanged numerous pictures and videos, some with references to symbols of the Third Reich and xenophobic depictions, via a messenger. The officers were forbidden to continue their duties. According to the current state of the investigation, there was no common chat group or a common network. In total, extensive investigations are currently underway against six members of the Osnabrück Police Department, although the severity of the allegations has so far differed.

Michael Maßmann, President of the Osnabrück Police Department, on the suspected cases: “These incidents must now be dealt with quickly and completely. If the suspicion is confirmed, we will act consistently and with the necessary severity Thoughts and their actions contradict the highest fundamental values of our democracy, have no place in the police. ”

According to the current status, several hundred pictures and videos with suspicious content had been sent at irregular intervals. The content was sent directly to the people involved in one-to-one communication via messenger. The officers are neither trainees nor members of special forces – they were all experienced officers in the police force.

The internal investigations started with criminal proceedings in a completely different context against one of the police officers concerned. As part of the evaluation of his mobile phone, the investigators came to the new suspicions and possible participants.

Note on original sounds: At 2 p.m., media representatives have the opportunity to receive a short statement from the police chief.
