Behind the Signal Erdogan Opens Relations with Israel

Analysts said Erdogan’s statement gave a special signal to Joe Biden.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, last week said he wanted better relations with Israel. But on the other hand, he still does not agree with Israel’s policy towards Palestine.

“If there were no problems at the top level (in Israel), our relationship could be very different,” Erdogan said on Friday (25/12).

He stated that the two countries continued to share intelligence. “We want to take our relationship to a better point,” said the Turkish president.

Erdogan also hopes for a possible restoration of Turkey-Israel relations that are developing in the Eastern Mediterranean. As is known, Ankara is in isolation in the region.

The question arises, what message does Erdogan really want to convey?

Analysts view this statement as a step to attract sympathy from the elected president of the United States (US), Joe Biden. Senior director of the Turkey Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracy and former member of the Turkish parliament, Aykan Erdemir, said Erdogan had enjoyed good relations with Donald Trump. That relationship protected him from tougher action, including sanctions demanded by both Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
