New ordinary racism video is controversial in New York

It’s a video that is talked about a lot in the United States. Posted on Saturday, December 26, it features a black teenager unfairly accused of stealing a cell phone, which illustrates the ordinary racism that is rampant in the country. The case was deemed important enough for justice to take up.

The facts unfolded in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel, At New York. A woman in her 30s wearing a mask is annoyed and calls out to hotel workers because she lost her phone and is persuaded the culprit is a 14 year old black teen. If she does not recognize the shell of her cell phone, she is sure that it is this young boy who took her away.

The tone rises and the woman even goes so far as to ask the teenager to prove that it’s his phone. The manager of the hotel seems to go in his direction before the video breaks and we learn that his cell phone was found in a taxi then reported to the hotel reception.

A frequent phenomenon in the United States

The teenager’s father, who recorded the footage of this argument, decided to post it on social media. Keyon Harrold is a trumpeter and has a certain notoriety after having worked with Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Eminem in particular. He had booked a room with his son in the hotel at the time of the incident.

He published this video because it reflects, according to him, ordinary racism suffered by his son, while the hotel staff instinctively believed the young woman. Making a lot of talk about her, New York Police and Manhattan District Attorney took up the case and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio responded by saying it was racism in his opinion.

For its part, the management of the establishment presented his excuses, acknowledging that his employees had not reacted appropriately. This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred in the United States and this phenomenon even has a name, the Karen. This generic name is used to designate those white women, proud of it, for whom African-Americans are a potential threat.

Lots of videos like this circulate on social networks and the most emblematic is that of Amy Cooper, published last May. This woman had called the police from Central Park because she said she was threatened by a black man when he had just come to watch the birds and asked him to keep his dog on a leash as stipulated by the park regulations.
