The 17th day of the DEL2 had the “Baden-Württeberg duel” between the Steelers and the Wolves from Freiburg in the program. The third-placed Baden received the fourth from Swabia. With Daniel Naud and Fabian Dahlem’s team, Cody Brenner returned between the posts. Leon Doubrawa took a seat on the bench. After a strong 60 minutes, the Steelers overtook the Wolves with a 5-2 victory in the table.
The game in the “Echte Helden Arena” in Freiburg started with great speed from both sides. The Steelers came under early pressure after just two minutes, as Benjamin Zientek was put out by the referees Robert Paule and Marcus Brill for tripping. Thanks to the returnee Cody Brenner in goal and a concentrated performance, the home side’s power play could be killed. Riley Sheen regained the window after a great duel and passed Matt McKnight. The Canadian kept the overview and passed it on to Yannick Wenzel. The youngster made it 2-1 – a great goal and at the same time the intermediate result after 20 minutes.
The Breisgauer came out of the cabin with a lot of speed and pressure and wanted to achieve the second equalization of the evening. The Steelers held up well, and if something got through, Cody Brenner was there. In the middle of this urge phase, defender Benjamin Hüfner missed the third goal after great preparatory work by Matt McKnight and Riley Sheen. What the Defender failed, striker CJ Stretch did in the 27th minute. After a strong pass from Eric Stephan, the US boy’s shot hit the short corner. 3: 1. At the end of the second period, both teams could still play with one more man, but one goal would not succeed. The Badeners never gave up during the game and looked for their salvation on the offensive, but the compact defense in conjunction with Cody Brenner did not allow much. It got exciting again ten minutes before the end, as Cam Spiro scored 4-2 for Freiburg. But this time, too, the Steelers had the right answer. Norman Hauner vigorously pursued his opponent and enabled Riley Sheen to pass the pass to CJ Stretch. He showed his great technique again and scored the final score of 5: 2.
With the win, the Swabians climbed to third place in the table, which they want to defend in the away game against the Lausitzer Füchsen on Wednesday. The game in the Fuchsbau starts at 7:30 p.m.
