The New York Post, almost always in favor of Donald Trump, published a surprising and scathing editorial on the American president on Sunday. The daily criticizes the US president for his attempted “coup” by attacking a legitimate democratic election – and urges him to get back to work.

“Mr. President, it is time to put an end to this dark masquerade”, one can read at the beginning of the editorial of the American tabloid, owned by an ally of the right of Trump, Rupert Murdoch.

“We are one week away from an extremely important moment for the next four years of our country”, on which he should concentrate, continues the editorial, referring to the second round of the senatorial elections in Georgia, on January 5th.

“Unfortunately, you are obsessed with the next day, January 6, when Congress, in action pro forma, will certify the vote of the electoral college. You tweeted that as long as Republicans have the courage they can reverse the results and give you four more years in power. In other words, you are encouraging an undemocratic coup d’etat ”, insisted the New York Post.

“You had every right to investigate the election,” the editorial added. “But let’s be clear: these efforts have proven nothing.”

The newspaper criticized Trump’s fringe lawyer Sidney Powell, who challenges the election results in court, describing her as “a nutcase”. The suggestion by Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn to use “martial law” to keep the president in the White House amounts to “betrayal,” wrote the Post. “It is shameful.”

The Post urged Trump to put aside his charade on the presidential election outcome and instead focus on the Georgia Senate elections, which will determine which party controls the Senate.

“If Georgia falls … you will leave your party away from power,” the editorial warns. “The Democrats will try to describe you as an aberration of a mandate and, frankly, you help them do it: King Lear of Mar-a-Lago, railing against corruption in the world.”

He concluded, “If you insist on spending your last days at work threatening to burn everything down, that will be how you will be remembered. Not as a revolutionary, but as an anarchist who holds the match. ”
