Snow covers part of the Pyrénées in these end-of-year celebrations, making the crossing to Andorra and the Pas de la Case difficult. The Dirso (Direction interdepartmentale des routes du Sud Ouest) sees red on the roads, and special equipment is compulsory.
Roads affected by snow tires
In the Ariège, snow tires are compulsory fromAx-les-Thermes before taking the RN20 towards Andorra. Likewise in Eastern Pyrenees from the Puymorens tunnel, from the south entrance. All the RN 22 which leads to Pas de la Casa is also highlighted in red by the Dirso: this means that special equipment is compulsory and that the chances of a blockage on the road are high.
In addition, the movement of heavy goods vehicles over 19 tonnes is strictly prohibited. They can’t go further than Tarascon-sur-Ariège, south of Foix, nor to venture to Latour-de-Carol in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
