One million corona cases in South Africa | Currently Africa | DW

South Africa is currently being overwhelmed by a second corona wave. A million infections have been registered as of this Sunday. That’s 100,000 more than a week and a half ago. This is shown by the latest data from the South African Ministry of Health.

The rapid increase is putting the country’s health system under increasing pressure. According to their own information, several hospitals are already working on the edge of their capacities.

As in Great Britain, a new, more contagious variant of the coronavirus was recently discovered in South Africa. It is said to have contributed significantly to the current increase,

Sudden increase of almost 40 percent

Last week, South Africa recorded a daily average of 11,700 new infections – an increase of 39 percent compared to the previous week. On three consecutive days, from Wednesday to Friday, the number of new infections recorded rose to over 14,000, but fell sharply again on Saturday and Sunday.

The authorities are considering re-imposing restrictions to contain the spread of the virus. There is also talk of President Cyril Ramaphosa giving a televised address later this week.
