SG Flensburg-Handewitt has finished an extraordinary handball year as the league leader in the Bundesliga. Due to the 29:24 (17:13) success on Sunday at SC DHfK Leipzig, the runner-up goes into the six-week season break with 25: 3 points. The first pursuer of the Flensburg team are the Rhein-Neckar Löwen (23: 7), who easily beat the bottom of the table HSC 2000 Coburg with 39:24 (19: 8). Defending champion THW Kiel (22: 2), on the other hand, slipped to third place, but the record champion also played a few games less than the top duo.
“It was very exhausting because we had to take care of a lot of things that did not affect the sport. That costs an incredible amount of energy,” said Flensburg’s trainer Maik Machulla on the Sky TV channel for the previous season under Corona conditions. “But I think we will all learn a lot from this time, namely to be a little more humble and calm and to see some things more relaxed because there are more important things than sports.”
Another game was only canceled at short notice on Saturday. Because a player from HC Erlangen had tested positive for the corona virus, the game between Franconia and HSG Nordhorn-Lingen planned for Sunday had to be canceled. The games planned for Saturday between Frisch Auf Göppingen and GWD Minden and between Eulen Ludwigshafen and MT Melsungen had already been canceled due to corona.
Foxes consolidate their place in the top group
Nevertheless, several games still took place this weekend. In addition to Flensburg and the Lions, the Füchse Berlin also consolidated their place in the top group of the league with a 29:23 (16:11) victory at TBV Lemgo. Previously, on Saturday, SC Magdeburg held fifth place with a 33:25 (19:10) against TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and thus held the place behind the Berliners. At the top, however, are the Flensburgers, where the Swede Hampus Wanne was the best thrower with nine hits.
Despite the recent significant defeat in Kiel (23:32), the Rhein-Neckar Löwen remain at the top of the table, also because national team captain Uwe Gensheimer acted accurately against Coburg as usual. The 34-year-old scored seven goals.
