‘Inspired by The Fifth Element’ is emblazoned on the cover of New York Race: Although there is practically nothing to see of the plot and the main characters from Luc Besson’s classic, the levitation vehicles and the futuristic metropolitan scenario are quite similar to the original.
As the pilot of a car-like speedster, you compete in a dozen races through several areas of the city. Since you are floating, you can race in practically all of the airspace, but often your opponents or winding buildings get in your way. The best way to avoid the buildings is with the help of the four shoulder buttons, so you can move vertically and horizontally as an addition to the normal steering. You show your opponents who the better pilot is with an extra effort: Shields and turbos are non-aggressive aids, while a speed-sapping water bubble and nasty fire bombs slow down the other drivers.
