The Swiss Stan Wawrinka won the Australian Open 2014, defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and Rafael Nadal in the final. Since then, he has only reached the semi-finals in Melbourne twice: defeated by Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in 2015 and 2017.
In the last edition he played in the quarterfinals, where he was beaten in three sets by Alexander Zverev. Today, ranked 18th in the world, Stan – one of the tour’s veterans – is preparing to start the 2021 season in the best possible way.
He will be 36 years old. In a new interview published by Essentially Sports, he briefly hinted at his post-retirement plans that were only sparked in the past few weeks.
Wawrinka: “I can’t add anything else”
The former number three in the world said: “In addition to tennis, I am interested in many other things, for example cinema. But I prefer to keep these projects to myself.
Right now I want to focus 100% on tennis. “Stan has won 16 career titles, including three Grand Slam trophies and a Masters 1000, as well as an Olympic gold medal in doubles with Federer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
His last success on the tour was in May 2017 when he defeated Mischa Zverev and won the tournament in Geneva, Switzerland for the second time, which was part of the ATP 250 category. He has since returned to the Roland Garros, Rotterdam and Antwerp finals where he was beaten by Rafael Nadal, Gael Monfils and Andy Murray.
As for the double specialty, in addition to the aforementioned win in Beijing 2008, the Swiss won an edition of the event in Chennai, India together with Frenchman Benoit Paire.
Together with Roger Federer he played the final of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 2011, where they lost in the super tiebreak of the third set to Xavier Malisse and Aleksandr Dolgopolov.
