The shaving dishes produced in Arita in the 17th and 18th centuries were primarily intended for export to China and Europe: in this they testify to the existence of trade between Japan and the rest of the world before the opening of the country in the 19th century, notably through the Dutch East India Company and the Chinese networks. These ceramics, recognizable by their dominant red and blue on a white background and their floral decorations (“kakiemon” style) were mainly produced in the first half of the 18th century. They were very popular in Europe, where French collectors referred to them for a long time under the name of “Old Japan”. [G. Magnier, 2018]
