Double blow to India; Mohammad Shami out of Test series

Adelaide: Mohammad Shami’s injury has left India in the dark after a humiliating defeat in the first Test against Australia. The scan confirmed that Shami’s right wrist was fractured by Pat Cummins’ bouncer and he will miss the entire Test series.

After receiving the scan report, the team management clarified that Shami will not play in the remaining three Tests. Captain Virat Kohli had earlier said after the match that Shami’s hand was in good pain and he was taken to hospital for scanning.

Shami reached the crease in the 11th over as India were bowled out for just 36 in the second innings. The bouncer, who was thrown by Pat Cummins, first tried to pull Shami, but then the ball bounced off his hand as he was evading the bouncer. The Indian innings ended at 36/9 when Shami retired due to injury. Shami did not bowl in Australia’s second innings.

The loss of Captain Virat Kohli along with Mohammad Shami on his return from paternity leave is a blow to India. Shami bowled only in the first innings of the first Test. Shamim could not take a wicket.

Ishant Sharma, who was injured during the IPL, has been ruled out of the series due to injury and is expected to play in Shamim and Bumrah. With Shami’s return, only Jaspreet Bumra and Umesh Yadav will be in charge of leading Indian bowling. Shamim could be replaced by Mohammad Sirajo or Navdeep Saini in the squad for the second Test.
