The recently reported South African mutant virus is known to be highly contagious and is of great concern.
The quarantine authorities have decided to take preemptive measures against immigrants from South Africa, even though the mutant virus has not yet been detected in Korea.

The mutant virus, which is prevalent in South Africa, is characterized by better binding to cells than the existing Corona 19 and invading the human body more easily.
The binding site of the cell receptor is wide and close.
The quarantine authorities said that no South African mutant virus has been found in Korea.
However, they are taking preemptive measures to prevent domestic inflow.
In the future, immigrants departing from South Africa, in addition to the existing diagnostic tests and 14-day quarantine measures, will be additionally tested for Corona 19 before quarantine is lifted.
Again, it is the same measure that required diagnostic tests before quarantine for those arriving from the UK where the mutant virus has spread.

From last October to the day before yesterday (25th), there were a total of 505 immigrants departing from South Africa, of which seven were confirmed.
The quarantine authorities explained that the seven confirmed cases will be confirmed through full-length genome analysis, and that they are currently being analyzed.
Experts advised that mutations should be prevented from spreading by delaying the inflow point while being wary of excessive concerns as the mutation proceeds to a higher spread but a lower severity.
