A very difficult year due to Corona is coming to an end for the event industry. How the current situation is and when to hope for improvement. Hello has asked.

“Destructive”, “disastrous”, “worse than ever expected”: the makers of Event industry agree in their conclusion on 2020. No wonder thousands of events in Munich had to be canceled or postponed.

“Our turnover has fallen by almost 100 percent,” says Michael Schöne, Marketing Manager at the organizer Munich music the location. It remains to be seen to what extent the aid programs announced by politicians will actually arrive, ”said Schöne. Currently, eight percent of November and December sales are expected.

A considerable amount of effort, with which not only no money comes in, but even flows out: “The advance booking fee goes back to the customer.”

Most customers would understand if the reverse transaction process takes longer – but many don’t even use it: Via the “Your ticket to culture“Around 40,000 tickets worth 160,000 euros were donated.

How many Tickets will actually not be returned, and how much money this will bring the organizers will only be known in the 1st quarter of 2021.

At the moment there is a lull in any case: “People are definitely buying cautiously for 2021,” said Rusch. On the one hand, because there is not so much to buy yet, on the other hand, because we are still waiting to see how the situation develops.

Nonetheless, Rusch is looking ahead: “We cannot see black until the end of the day,” he says, bringing to the point the optimism that also unites the culture makers: “Carefully optimistic” Munich music for open-air events in summer, the Olympic Park is also hoping for an upward trend here (see below).

Will it be normal until 2022?

Nils Hoch is deputy chief Executive Officer of Olympiapark München GmbH and Head of Events / Sales. In hello he looks back and forward.

Mr. Hoch, what is your conclusion on the Corona year?

I am basically a positive person, but there is no other way of saying it: 2020 was disastrous for the industry.

How many events could take place?

We normally have around 400 events in the Olympic Park each year. This year it wasn’t a quarter of it. It was a bad year for us economically. In previous years, however, we did well, which is why we are not falling as low.

Were there any bright spots?

The summer stage in the Olympic Stadium with 60 evenings, for example, was very well attended. I do not want to shut myself off from repeating this concept, although I would prefer a regular event year in 2021.

Your prognosis of how things will continue?

In summer we hope for an initial upward trend, for the 3rd quarter we are optimistic that we will be able to hold more events again. We expect relatively normal event operations at the beginning of 2022 – from an economic point of view and in terms of the quantity of events.

Nils Hoch, Deputy Managing Director of Olympiapark München GmbH and Head of the Events / Sales Department.
