Zhangye, Gansu, 12/25/2020 (The People Online) – Snow flies outside the greenhouse, while the inside is filled with Chinese pumpkins. “One greenhouse produces around 120,000 jin of this vegetable (one jin equals half a kilo), and two greenhouses produce a quantity of Chinese pumpkins that sells for 300,000 yuan,” said An Hai, the greenhouse owner, speaking happily about the harvest.

This is Wangjiadun Town in Nijiaying, Linze County of Zhangye City, Gansu Province, China. Since March last year, An Hai has built eleven steel frame greenhouses, one of which is the size of nine basketball courts. In August this year, An Hai planted Chinese pumpkins in two greenhouses, which are now sold in batches.

When you enter the greenhouse, to the left is the integrated pond of water and fertilizers. After mixing it all up, this reaches the roots of the Chinese squash seedlings through the drip irrigation pipe. “The water and fertilizer formula has been established under the guidance of experts, and the system automatically controls the frequency, duration, temperature and humidity of irrigation in the greenhouse,” An Hai told the reporter.

Just over a year ago, this land was still part of the Gobi Desert and the cultivated part of Zhangye only represented less than 10% of the total area. “We have gradually converted part of the Gobi desert into arable land, we have saved water resources to protect the water source and we have improved the yield through the application of technology.” Since 2017, Zhangye has developed a total of 117,600 mu (1 mu equals 666 square meters) of land for agriculture in Gobi, with a total production value of 2.5 billion yuan, driving an increase in income of 110,000 people.

Water scarcity is a weak point in the Gobi agricultural development. “We promote high-end farmland construction by leveling the land, lining channels, and installing drip and sprinkler irrigation water-saving devices.” Zhang Wenbin, director of the Municipal Economic Crops Technology Extension Station, said that after the transformation, at least 1/3 of the water will be saved. “The surplus water index will be used in the irrigation water for Gobi agriculture.”

The Gobi Desert now smells of fruits and vegetables. In the Minle County Eco-Industrial Park, Zhangye Haisheng Modern Agriculture Co., Ltd. has a modern smart glass greenhouse covering an area of 200,000 square meters with a higher degree of automation. “The whole greenhouse, from the building materials, the building standards to the transportation technology, is very advanced.” The company’s production technology manager An Kangping said that the temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide concentration are automatically controlled by computer. Each cluster of tomatoes grown in the greenhouse has a similar number, and the size, color and flavor of each tomato is very similar. The irrigation and fertilization of each plant is controlled uniformly by a precision water and fertilization cycle system. In addition, sensors are installed in the upper, middle and lower parts of the greenhouse to ensure a constant growing environment for the plants.

In order to mobilize the enthusiasm of social capital to invest in Gobi agriculture, the government has successively introduced a series of policy measures. Since 2017, Zhangye has successively obtained 215 million yuan of funds from the central and provincial government, in addition to providing specific subsidies, offering aid after the completion of built projects, and substituting subsidies for prizes, supporting enterprises in land allocation. , supporting infrastructure, seedling and crop breeding, efficient water saving, research, scientific development, sales, product circulation and brand building.

“Thanks to the attentive service of the city cadres, the property rights certificate for more than 50 mu of land came quickly, I put up an endorsement, I got a 2 million yuan loan without problems,” An Hai said gratefully. The senior agronomist at Nijiaying City Agricultural and Rural Comprehensive Service Center also provided him with free consultation services on seedling cultivation, field management and pest control. “The agronomist came at least twice a week and taught me to reduce the planting density. The yield of the Chinese squash has increased a lot.”
