Son Heung-min was ranked 22nd in this year’s ranking announced by the Guardian on the 25th. Since 2012, the Guardian selects and announces the top 100 soccer players who performed the most out of the world soccer players every year.
Son Heung-min was ranked 78th in 2018 and first appeared in this ranking. Last year, it was ranked 19th, and this year, it proved the value of the modifier’world class’ by raising its name in a similar ranking. Among the top 100 soccer players announced this year, Son Heung-min is the only Asian player.
The Guardian entrusted the vote to 241 evaluators from 71 countries around the world. When each selected from the 1st to 40th place, the ranking was composed by assigning different points for each ranking and adding them. Son Heung-min received votes from 208 out of the 214 voters. The Guardian said, “Son Heung-min showed a hot start for the 2020-21 season. “We are cruising toward a new record for the most individual scoring in a season.”
The overall first place honor went to Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich). Lewandowski scored 55 goals in the regular league and cup competitions in the 2019-20 season, beating Lionel Messi (Barcelona) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus). After this award was enacted, Lewandowski is the second player other than Messi and Ronaldo have been ranked first since Luka Modric (Real Madrid) in 2018. Messi, who was number one last year, went down one step to second, and Ronaldo climbed one step from fourth to third.
Kevin the Browner (Manchester) and Sadio Manet (Liverpool) ranked 4th and 5th, making their names in the’Top 5′. The 6th-10th place consisted of Killian Mbafe (Paris Saint-Germain), Mohammed Salah (Liverpool), Neymar da Silva (Paris Saint-Germain), and Virgil van Dyke (Liverpool). Harry Kane, Son Heung-min’s attacking partner, ranked 20th, similar to Son Heung-min’s ranking.
