“Sometimes as a government you have to say: now it is mandatory to vaccinate”, says Lamers. “I think it’s a shame that the cabinet is not taking that step. We have a lot of mandatory vaccinations, as a child you also received a whole package. You can’t refuse, it’s just mandatory. Polio is also mandatory.”
Participation in the National Immunization Program, which includes the vaccination against polio, is not compulsory. About 95 percent of the parents do participate in the program.
“I think the cabinet would be wise to introduce this obligation and not just count on voluntary action. If less than fifty percent gets vaccinated, we still have a problem in the Netherlands.
