Republicans on Thursday thwarted the attempt by the Democratic caucus in the House of Representatives to approve an economic aid of 2,000 dollars to each American citizen, proposed by President Donald Trump.
The event occurred when the House, dominated by Democrats, met at the end of its session to formally approve the financial aid that combines 1.4 trillion dollars from the public budget with assistance for the pandemic and with a large amount of items not related to the topic.
However, Thursday’s session lasted just 12 minutes in which hopes of the project, negotiated on behalf of Trump by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, were dashed.
The second-in-rank of the House Democrats, Steny Hoyer, sought unanimous approval for the bill, but Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, who was not physically present in the House, refrained from giving his approval and the management was frustrated.
Trump threatened, in a short video posted Tuesday, to veto the project. If it fulfills its threat, the government would suffer a partial shutdown as of December 29 and the announced checks of $ 600 per person would not reach the public.
