Low number of credit cards, but Costa Ricans owe more – CRC 891

A study by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Commerce (MEIC), determined that From July to October 2020, the number of credit cards in circulation decreased by 8.47%, which means 237 thousand fewer plastics.

However, that same investigation showed that in the indicated period the debt balance increased by 47 million, so that the average debt balance per card is 442 thousand colones.

According to the information collected, there are 32 credit card issuers from private banks, public banks, cooperatives and private companies operating in the country and 429 types of cards were registered.

Regarding the interannual behavior, delinquencies from 1 to 90 days increased by 0.70%, while, after more than 90 days, it decreased by 0.88%.

With regard to data on debit cards, the number of associated accounts for the study as of October 31, in the market there are almost 6 million circulation cards, where 5.7 million are card holders and 187 thousand are additional cards.

28 financial institutions are registered, offering a total of 333 debit cards, of which 131 are in dollars and two in euros.
