Zoom was not very concerned with security. More smaller or younger companies or services are affected by this. Zoom fits well in that image. Zoom has been around since 2011, but due to the Corona crises, Zoom has grown very quickly and it really must have been “all hands on deck” to keep it going at all.
The fact that it was already reported that the connection was encrypted also fits with that chaos. At the time the decision was made, others reported that the encryption had already been implemented.
In the beginning they also collected way too much data from the user. That has been scaled back after complaints. Encryption has also been added afterwards.
Fortunately, many people have also reported that security is poor and that governments and companies have also advised against using Zoom. Messages like that can really trigger an “OOPS moment” within a company and cause a turnaround in a fairly short time. That certainly happened with Zoom, but whether that is enough is not entirely clear. Communication about this is not very clear and after the first misses you no longer know whether they are talking about plans or actual implementation.
It is a pity that Zoom also comes from the west of the US. A little competition from another part of the world (preferably Europe) would be very good.
