“Roger Federer is enthusiastic about the Laver Cup, it keeps him going”

The fourth edition of the Laver Cup will take place September 24-26, 2021 in Boston’s TD Garden. Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem have been confirmed for Team Europe. More players from above are poised to join two teams in the coming months.

The event should have taken place in September this year, but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus. The organizers hoped to have another great tournament in ten months.

Mats Wilander believes the Laver Cup is a factor driving Roger Federer to extend his career and compete for a few more years. In Geneva 2019, Team Europe prevailed in the decisive game against Team World, kept the trophy in the cabinet and celebrated it properly.

After the first two encounters on the last day, Team World had an edge over its rivals and it was Roger Federer who had to defeat John Isner to keep Team Europe alive. The Swiss prevailed in two tight sentences to reduce the deficit and draw attention to Alexander Zverev, who fought Milos Raonic in the title fight.

Of course the game was a thriller and the German took the lead in the tiebreaker game to secure the title for Team Europe for the second year running. That ended an incredible competition that made the tennis news stand out on the weekend of the week.

Roger has so far played 11 Laver Cup games, won all six in singles and achieved two triumphs from five doubles. He shared the pitch with his greatest rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Wilander believes that Federer wants to play Laver Cup for more years

Roger is hoping for a fresh start in 2021 after missing almost the entire season behind us, only competing in the Australian Open and then suffering a setback in injury.

Roger underwent knee surgery in February and planned to return in June but was still having pain issues. The Swiss did another operation in May and decided to skip the rest of the year and focus on 2021.

Federer is currently in Dubai, working hard on his game and trying to prepare for the Australian Open which starts in February. “In my opinion, the Laver Cup is driven by Roger Federer. It will be a lot more exciting than the Davis Cup.

Roger knows that he can play the Laver Cup for another four or five years, with best-of-three encounters and exciting double encounters. Roger owns the Laver Cup and I think he wants to stay in shape and do his best every time he plays it. I think his goals in 2021 are the Olympics and the Laver Cup, “said Mats Wilander.
