Apple Boosts Production of Autonomous Cars in 2024

Merdeka.com – Apple continues to strive to be able to produce cars with self-driving or autonomous technology. According to a new report, Apple aims to produce autonomous cars by 2024. Reported by Reuters on Thursday (24/12), according to several sources, Apple will use its better battery technology.

Apple’s efforts in the auto industry have been known as Project Titan since 2014. The company started designing its own vehicles from the start. But Apple has reportedly suspended those efforts, then shifted focus to software and reassess its goals.

Doug Field, who previously worked at Tesla, returned to Apple to oversee the project in 2018. He then laid off 190 people from the team in 2019. Since then, according to sources, Apple has grown sufficiently to now aim to make vehicles for consumers. Apple’s target is to produce private vehicles for the mass market.

At the heart of Apple’s current strategy is a new battery design, which can greatly reduce battery costs, and increase vehicle range. So far, Apple has refused to comment on its plans or new products.

Apple Challenge

Building a vehicle means that Apple will face challenges in the supply chain, even if the company has large capital. It took Tesla CEO Elon Musk 17 years before he finally made sustainable profits from car production.

“If there’s one company on the planet that has the resources to do it, it’s probably Apple. But at the same time, it’s not a cell phone,” said someone from the Project Titan team.

There is no information yet about the company that will assemble the Apple car. According to sources, Apple will likely rely on manufacturing partners to manufacture vehicles.

Despite targeting the production of autonomous cars by 2024, there is a possibility that the process will be delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This means that production could begin in 2025 or later
