Now it is certain: With The Edge, New York City will open the highest outdoor skydeck in the western hemisphere on March 11, 2020. The new highlight is intended to give visitors never-before-seen perspectives of the metropolis and will soon be on every bucket list in the world.
It takes the elevator 60 seconds to reach the viewing platform, which protrudes up to 24 meters from the 100th floor of the new “30 Hudson Yards” skyscraper at a height of 345 meters. For comparison: the open viewing platform of the Empire State Building is “only” at a height of 320 meters. There is also another view point at 373 meters, but it is inside the building.
The Edge was designed by William Pedersen and Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF). The 347-ton outdoor sky deck consists of 15 sections, each weighing 16 to 45 tons, which are bolted together and anchored on the east and south sides of the building. The 7,500 square meter outdoor area is surrounded by 79 panes of glass that were manufactured in Germany and finalized in Italy.
The glass floor, through which you can see directly to street level, promises a special thrill. The champagne bar on the 100th floor offers a glass of champagne or a typical cocktail and small bites that can be enjoyed inside or on the sky deck. The “Peak” restaurant for lunch and dinner, a café, a bar and event rooms are located on the 101st floor.
Hudson Yards: Manhattan’s new neighborhood
The outdoor skydeck is part of the new Hudson Yards neighborhood developed by Related Companies and the Oxford Properties Group. The 28 hectare area on the West Side of Manhattan connects more than 100 shops and restaurants with cultural institutions, offices, apartments, a school and five hectares of public parks.
The heart of the two hectare “Public Square & Gardens” is “The Vessel”: The 16-storey construction, designed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick and opened in March of this year, is accessible over 1.6 kilometers of stairs and is considered one of the new landmark of the city.
The Edge will be open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to midnight. Tickets are on now www.edgenyc.com available. You are always tied to a specific day and time. However, there is no time limit for the visit. Online pricing is $ 36 for adults and $ 31 for children (plus tax). You pay 2 US dollars more on site. A glass of champagne at a height of 345 meters must be worth $ 20 to the visitor.
