Dutch people on holiday less and cheaper, but the house costs more NOW

8.5 million Dutch people went on holiday in the third quarter, about a quarter less than in the same period last year. The number of holidaymakers in the Netherlands was more than a quarter higher in the summer months than in 2019, while the number of travelers abroad was just 60 percent lower. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Wednesday.

The summer has thus brought some compensation, especially for the domestic holiday industry, for the disastrous second quarter, in which the first corona wave fell. Hardly anyone went abroad at the time, but the number of domestic holidaymakers was also 30 percent lower in the second quarter than a year earlier.

Those who went on vacation in the third quarter spent less. Holidays in the Netherlands were allowed to cost an average of 189 euros per person, which is 35 percent less than the 239 euros in the summer of 2019. Abroad, holidaymakers spent an average of 526 euros, more than 40 percent less than last year (888 euros).

A shift can also be seen in these expenditures: last summer, holidaymakers spent more on accommodation than in 2019, especially in the Netherlands. On average, accommodation here cost 160 euros per person per holiday, a quarter more than in 2019 (120 euros).

Expenditure on catering almost disappears

When traveling abroad, there was not much difference in the average cost of accommodation, but transport was on average a lot cheaper, mainly because many people stayed closer to home. In addition, both domestic and foreign holidaymakers – whether or not necessarily – spent less on things such as catering, shopping and trips.

The catering expenditure for the domestic traveler was on average only 10 percent of the level of 2019. Abroad, the Dutch could do very little in this area: on average, people spent just 6 euros in foreign food and beverage outlets in the summer months.
