In his Christmas address to the Roman Curia, Francis mentioned the controversial Archbishop Hélder Câmara of Olinda and Recife (+1999).
He called Câmara “this holy bishop from Brazil” and quoted his saying: “If you work with the poor, you are called a saint, if you eliminate poverty, you are called a communist.”
In 2015 a “beatification process” for Câmara was initiated. He began as a political opportunist in the fascist movement, then became a Marxist who was called “Fidel Castro in cassock”. Câmara supported women’s ordination, divorce, polygamy and birth control.
