In Oristano, work is underway to reopen the Medicine department of the San Martino hospital to non-covid patients. It could happen in the next few days and it would be a really nice Christmas present. Above all, it would be well in advance, compared to the sixty days of waiting announced at first and linked to the conclusion of the work to be carried out at the hospital in Bosa.
As explained by Sergio Pili, director of the San Martino Hospital, in the Medicine department of Oristano, reserved for patients suffering from covid since last December 5 following the wave of infections between patients and staff, “about 15 people are currently hospitalized, half of which will be discharged and will return home in the next few hours, while some of them will be transferred to Covid hospitals in the region and the rest will be hosted in the upcoming nursing home in Macomer ”.

The premises of the Oristano Medicine Department will therefore be sanitized before making the approximately 60 beds in the two sections available. Always if in the meantime it will be possible to have the necessary staff, halved in recent weeks by the spread of infections among doctors and nurses.
A race against time, therefore, that of the management of the San Martino hospital, struggling in recent days with yet another emergency in the ER. Open to non-Covid patients after more than 50 days of closure, the hospital is again in trouble, due to the difficulty in finding a bed for patients to be allocated to the medical department, thus forced to stay for a few days in the clinics and corridors, waiting of a more suitable accommodation. A wait that is also affected by the long times required by the swab analysis, without which it is not possible to program any transfer.
This is a problem that is expected to be overcome with the installation, currently underway in the analysis laboratory, of a new equipment capable of examining a battery of 11 rapid buffers in just over an hour, and for which at the moment the “incubator” is still awaited, an indispensable device to ensure its functioning.
It should be remembered that the medical department of the Bosa hospital, temporarily converted from Covid to non-covid last Friday, reached in a few days the maximum capacity of its 30 beds, half of which however reserved for the “gray zone” and is problematic. also get hospitality in the other non-Covid hospitals in the region, all of which are already saturated.
Certainly, the accommodation of patients with internal pathologies is also complicated by the closure of the medical department of the San Gavino hospital, due to infections among the staff. A large part of the users of that area gravitate to San Gavino, which will now have to be dealt with in part also in Oristano.
With the reactivation of the Oristano medical department, the San Martino di Oristano and the Mastino di Bosa will therefore return to Covid Free. While the Delogu hospital in Ghilarza will remain reserved for patients suffering from Covid, as long as they require “low intensity” care, that is, in non-serious conditions.
In the meantime, the adaptation works of the medical gas distribution network will have to be started at the Bosa hospital, in order to activate the 30 Covid beds provided for in the Region’s plan in that hospital.
