Are you using a home printer? And if so, is a laser or ink more suitable for home? – Živě.cz

Home printers were standard household equipment years ago. But how is it today? Do you still own and use it, or have you completely switched to electronic documents? Let’s talk about it. Let’s start with a survey on whether you have a printer at all and how often you use it:

But having a printer at home is not just that – there is a relatively wide selection on the market. How did you proceed with it and what model and why did you choose it in the end? We also asked ourselves these questions in our editorial office, you can share your experience in the discussion.

How we (don’t) use printers in the newsroom

Vladislav Kluska: I never really had my printer at home. It used to be more restrictive at times and I had to make more use of familiar and copy centers. Today it comes to me as buying complete uselessness. I have everything online, I don’t need a printer and when once a year or two I need to print something, I jump into the copy center.

Lukáš Václavík: I have had a Canon Pixma MP630 inkjet multifunction for 12 years and this year I planned to replace it with another. The printhead is already in trouble and I also wanted network support. In the end, however, I realized that I practically do not print in color, I take photos in a photo lab and I also copy only minimally. In the fall, I finally chose the refurbished Samsung SL-M3820DW. A massive, low-cost laser that I can easily connect to a mobile phone, so I can do without a scanner. In addition, it warmed my heart that I did not produce more waste by buying a new model, but used a retiree from the office.

Marek Lutonský: Laser, and probably never again. I admit that during the years when I was very dissatisfied with an inkjet printer, I didn’t really need to print much. So the ink kept drying and the cost per page printed was unbearably rising. Then I came to terms with the fact that I would not print at home, but with a child at school – especially now in the half-online one – it is not possible without printing. I have been satisfied with the cheap black and white laser Samsung SL-M2070W for three years. It prints well, quickly and the toner does not dry; but with a few papers a day, ink certainly wouldn’t make it. I buy non-genuine toner.

Connecting the printer to the network via Wi-Fi (without WPS) was not easy at all, I quite struggled with it. In addition, Apple AirPrint stopped working over time. We do not use multifunction functions for scanning and copying at all, scanning applications in mobile phones are more convenient and their output is comparable. Sometimes duplex printing would be useful, but I would probably like that after a printer in this price category.

Jakub Čížek: I threw my last printer out of the house in 2010, when the ink dried after half a year of sleep. Although I understand that the year 2020 showed how a classic printer is still absolutely key for families with children in distance learning, its presence in many Czech households also reminds us that we have still not been able to switch to a digital mindset.

Karel Javůrek: We have the HP OfficeJet 6950 multifunction printer at home, which Apple recommends as the only “home” on its own website. It works wirelessly and, most importantly, quickly via Secure Airprint without any problems through all devices in the home. It can do everything I need.

Karek Kilián: I have a Samsung ML-3710 black and white laser printer. I chose her mainly because I had her in my previous job, where she appeared to be a reliable worker with a relatively low failure rate. The relatively decent cost of printing one page also played a role. Black and white printing is quite sufficient for me – I print only very rarely, my wife prints the most pages due to school materials.

Tomáš Holčík: I have a black and white laser scanner and Wi-Fi Samsung SCX-3405W. I don’t know how long, but since Samsung hasn’t made printers in a few years and sold them to HP, I’d say a long time. I print on it exceptionally, I still have the starting smaller toner there and even though it is at 0%, it still prints. But sometimes I need to print, it wouldn’t be possible without a printer. I use a scanner, Samsung has a mobile app for scanning, so I scan right on the phone and it’s always better than taking a photo of the paper on the table. And the ink bottle also dried at home, so it’s always just a laser.

David Polesný: I have an inkjet multifunction from HP, currently model 6075. I only print sporadically, usually just a few things for school children, but sometimes color is also good, so I rejected the laser. Experience has taught me that the original cartridges do not dry immediately, and even if the printer does not move for a month, nothing happens. Alternative inks dried faster, so I don’t take them anymore, however, even with those originals, I prefer to print something once a month. The cost of printing is minimal, I buy refills once a year, maybe not even that.
