Expensive damage, insurances put pressure: Now 19 cameras should deter vandals – Freiamt – Aargau

The municipal association of the Burkertsmatt sports facility on the Mutschellen is taking measures to prevent property damage on the site. A total of 19 video cameras are to be used to monitor the outside and inside area. The corresponding regulations for video surveillance are still available to the public at the three municipal offices in Widen, Rudolfstetten and Berikon until January 12, or can be found on the website www.burkertsmatt.ch can be viewed.

“It’s a shame we have to do that. But we had no other choice, ”explains Marcel Signer, President of the Burkertsmatt Association Board. There have been more acts of vandalism that now require action.

A large pane of glass costs 10,000 francs

“It’s mainly about the glass damage. After one insurance company had already terminated our contract, the second insurance company now also told us that we had to act in this regard, ”says Signer. Anyone who knows Burkertsmatt well knows that the hall has a particularly large amount of glass. Only recently one of the large panes of glass on the triple hall was destroyed again.

“Such a disk costs around 10,000 francs if it has to be replaced,” explains the association president. It takes a lot of effort to damage such a special disc with a stone.

The regulations clearly describe which areas are within the surveillance perimeter. Inside the ground floor six cameras have the entrances and the cloakroom in their field of vision, the remaining 13 cameras monitor the outside area with the glass fronts, facades and entrances. The Burkertsmatt is not monitored around the clock by video. Although the cameras are continuous on Saturday and Sunday, during the week they only operate in the evening and during the night. Marcel Signer is confident that these will have an effect: “If you can identify the perpetrator in this way, everyone is served.” The region has had good experiences with similar surveillance at schools or leisure facilities.

Recordings are deleted after seven days

«The destruction has decreased noticeably, as I was assured. Just the board with the information about the video surveillance is preventive, ”says Marcel Signer. Such information boards are clearly visible on the Burkertsmatt at every monitored point – including a QR code that leads to the regulations. The recordings are deleted after seven days. In the event of an incident, the association reports to the technical operator of the cameras, who will evaluate the recordings.

According to the regulations, the cameras are aligned so that no private properties are recorded. If everything goes smoothly, the video regulations will come into force on January 15, 2021. “The implementation should then go very quickly,” says Marcel Signer. And the nonsensical acts of vandalism are a thing of the past.
