Vettel: “Lewis motivated me to keep going” | hessenschau.de

Sebastian Vettel received a lot of encouragement from record world champion Lewis Hamilton in his difficult last Formula 1 year at Ferrari.

“Just after the bad news in the spring, Lewis called me,” Vettel told the Swiss tabloid Blick: “We then had a few more conversations or wrote to each other. He always cheered me up and motivated me to continue.”

After Vettel was informed by team boss Mattia Binotto on May 12th that his expiring contract would not be extended, “the signs for the new season were different” than in previous years. Vettel affirmed that he had “of course” not ruled out a resignation at this point. After a period of reflection, however, he had “come to the decision that there was still something slumbering in me. And that’s how I got in touch with the new Aston Martin team.”

With the British racing team, which finished the past season under the name Racing Point as fourth in the constructors’ championship and ahead of Ferrari, Vettel signed a contract in the summer from the coming season until the end of 2023.
