League of Justice star Ray Fisher has been cast in the ABC limited series Women of the Movement, which lists Jay-Z and Will Smith as producers. First announced in November, with a release scheduled for 2021, Women of the Movement focuses on the story of Mammie Till-Mobley (Adrienne Warren) and her son Emmett Till (Cedric Joe). Following Emmett’s horrific lynching in Jim Crow South, Mammie dedicates her life to seeking justice.
By Deadline, Fisher will join the six-part series as Gene Mobley. A devoted partner of Mammie, they later married. If it weren’t for Emmett’s brutal murder, Gene would have been his stepfather. Fisher will appear alongside Glynn Turman and Niecy Nash, who have also been cast on the ABC show. Marissa Jo Cerar is the creator and showrunner of Women of the Movement, which includes the production team of Will Smith, Jay-Z and prolific television producer Aaron Kaplan.
Inspired by the book Emmett Till: The murder that shocked the world and fueled the civil rights movement From author Devery S. Anderson, the limited series will allow Fisher to participate in a powerful and heartbreaking story. Famously, for her son’s funeral in Chicago, Mamie insisted that the coffin containing her son’s body remain open. She made that decision because, in her words, “I wanted the world to see what they did to my baby.”
