These parents want to keep the choice of their children’s education – Quimper

They made the choice of family education for the education of their children. A choice that these Finistère families would like to keep but which is threatened by the bill “consolidating the principles of the Republic”. This provides for limiting family education to a few exceptions to prevent sectarian or religious abuses.

About fifty parents and children demonstrated this Saturday, Place Saint-Corentin, for the right to choose the education of their children. “I was given to understand that he was going to disappear. I was not explained why. I was not offered an alternative, a solution. Just for that, it deserves to be there today, ”explains Erwan, from Locronan, as to the reason for his presence.

“Bring a different perspective”

Her children are 4 and 2 years old. The eldest is educated in the family. “We said to ourselves that maybe we were respectful enough to keep our child at home and try to give him a different look than he could have had at school,” explains the father. We just live with our children rather than setting up activities like we could find at school. For us it’s more of a co-construction. It’s a fairly magical daily life and here we are told it’s over we’ll have to go back to school ”. Putting his son in a school, Erwan is not against, but he wants it to remain a choice.

A choice made by Sophie, from Plougastel, for her youngest child. His three eldest children have only known family education. The oldest is in sixth grade. “As we had four very different levels, with kindergarten, primary and middle school, we made the choice that the last be educated,” explains the mother.

“We did not even ask the question”

For Aurore, who lives in Douarnenez, the choice of family education was made very naturally for her 10 and 4 year old children. “We traveled a lot so we didn’t even ask ourselves whether we would send them to school or not. We just lived our family life teaching our children like everyone else does. As we were abroad, there was no declaration to make to say that we are not going to send our children to school, ”she explains.

She returned to live in France two years ago and therefore declared herself as a family teacher. “We try to follow the school program for maths and French but not necessarily in relation to their age. We will rather do according to their capacities, ”she describes.

In case of difficulties of her children, she adapts. “If they ever slow down on certain subjects, we slow down with them, that’s not a problem. If they accelerate, we accelerate. For subjects such as history or geography and art, we read a lot of books, we learn a lot by going to see exhibitions. We learn together and we discover together ”.
