Meet the plan IA2021 and the Smart Health strategy announced in October 2018 and September 2020 respectively, the Île-de-France Region is launching, in partnership with AP-HP and Institut Curie and the support of Startup Inside, Medicen Paris Region and OVH , the AI for Health Challenge 2020 with a grand prize of 1 Million Euros.
Convinced that easier access to health data is today a key success factor for the development and validation of future health innovations as well as for the structuring of the medicine sector of the future in Ile-de-France, the Region also aims to contribute to the emergence of future European champions in AI applied to health like Owkin, winner of the 2019 edition of the Challenge co-organized with the IGR.
The 2020 Challenge is aimed at French and European startups and SMEs, associated with each other or with research laboratories, already established or having a short-term establishment project in Île-de-France and aims, for each of the Institutes, to produce algorithms to meet two major scientific objectives:
- For Public Assistance – Paris Hospitals, AP-HP : Identify diagnostic, prognostic and predictive factors using artificial intelligence tools in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (liver cancer)
- For Institut Curie : Developing algorithms for therapeutic decision-making in lung cancer
Candidate companies will have access to two samples of clinical research data provided by the AP-HP and the Institut Curie, as well as to a data calculation and analysis platform provided by OVH, in order to demonstrate their capacity. to work on these ambitious themes.
Description of the themes selected for the “AI for Health Challenge 2020”
AP-HP Challenge
The challenge proposed by AP-HP concerns intrahepathic cholangiocarcinoma, a rare cancer whose incidence is increasing, with a 5-year survival rate of only 10%. Surgical resection, the only curative option, is only performed in a third of cases, due to a diagnosis usually made at an advanced stage. Tumor development of cholangiocarcinoma indeed remains silent until an advanced stage. By relying on the expertise in oncology of the reference centers that are its Paul Brousse, Beaujon and Henri Mondor hospitals, the AP-HP proposes a challenge consisting in developing an AI model to perform virtual biopsies from scanners to better predict tumor aggressiveness. The objective of the partnership that will be developed with the start-up will be to develop artificial intelligence tools for imaging analysis (scanner and anatomopathology slides), to predict factors related to prognosis, such as fibrosis and the immune infiltrate. Several objectives will be offered to start-ups: to deduce from the scanner the location and size of tumors, and to predict certain characteristics usually obtained using biopsies (characteristics of tumor fibrosis).
Institut Curie Challenge
Classification of bronchopulmonary cancers from multiple data from a large cohort of patients. Bronchopulmonary cancers are the leading cause of cancer death in France; more than 46,000 cases of lung cancer were diagnosed in 2018. To guide the management of a patient, the expertise of pulmonologists, radiologists and pathologists is integrated at the individual patient level. Faced with this heterogeneous cancer, the question arises of the integration of all these specialties for a large cohort of patients. Artificial intelligence tools are expected to apprehend these large cohorts and reclassify these lung cancers in order to assess the patient’s prognosis and thus, suggest the best treatment to apply. Objective of the project: This will involve developing and validating an algorithm to classify patients with bronchopulmonary cancer from multi-modal data (clinical, radiological, pathological and genetic) to guide therapeutic decisions.
Applications can be submitted online from December 15 and will close on February 14 at the following address: https://www.iledefrance.fr/challenge-ai-health-2020
As a reminder, the competition in figures and key dates:
Price: € 1 million to be distributed over each of the two proposed challenges

About the Organizers
AP-HP, AP-HP is a globally recognized university hospital center with a European dimension. It is organized into six university hospital groups (AP-HP. Center – University of Paris; AP-HP. Sorbonne University; AP-HP. North – University of Paris; AP-HP. University of Paris Saclay; AP-HP. Henri Mondor and AP-HP University Hospitals, Paris Seine-Saint-Denis University Hospitals) and is organized around five universities in the Paris region. Its 39 hospitals welcome 8.3 million sick people each year: in consultation, in emergency, during scheduled hospitalizations or in hospitalization at home. She provides a public health service for all, 24 hours a day, and it is for her both a duty and a source of pride. AP-HP is the largest employer in Ile de France: 100,000 people – doctors, researchers, paramedics, administrative staff and workers – work there. http://www.aphp.fr
Curie Institute
The Curie Institute, 1is French center for the fight against cancer, associates an internationally renowned research center and a state-of-the-art hospital complex which takes care of all cancers, including the rarest. Founded in 1909 by Marie Curie, the Institut Curie brings together on 3 sites
(Paris, Saint-Cloud and Orsay) more than 3,600 researchers, doctors and caregivers around its 3 missions: care, research and teaching. A private foundation recognized as being of public utility authorized to receive donations and bequests, the Institut Curie can, thanks to the support of its donors, accelerate discoveries and thus improve the treatment and quality of life of patients. curie.fr
