What happened to previous Golden Boy winners as Haaland becomes 18th recipient

Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Haaland has become the latest prodigy to win the prestigious Golden Boy Award, with the 20-year-old following in the footsteps of a number of great players.

Barcelona’s Ansu Fati came second behind Haaland, while Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies was third.

It has been a great year for Haaland, who scored 33 goals in 32 appearances for Dortmund in 2020 after leaving RB Salzburg in January.

His magnificent scoring record means he has already been linked with a host of top European clubs and will look to emulate some of the biggest stars who have won the award.

However, some of those in the pipeline for stardom have not lived up to their potential.

Now Mirror Sport takes a look at the previous 17 award winners and how their careers have unfolded.

The first winner of the award after scoring 18 goals in 21 Eredivisie games for Ajax in the 2002-03 season, Van der Vaart moved to Germany to join Hamburg in 2005.

After spending three seasons at the club, he joined La Liga giants Real Madrid in 2008, but was unable to secure a regular place in the starting XI.
