As New York City celebrates its victory over Japan, a demobilized soldier, Jimmy Doyle, meets a young woman, Francine, at the Starlight Club, who helps her get hired at a Brooklyn nightclub. Francine is a talented singer, and Jimmy a beginning saxophonist. They will love each other, make a career, know the fame, separate and meet again ten years later.

The film is marked by the chanson “New York, New York” popularized by Frank Sinatra in 1979.
