– Former President Pierre Bouyoya of Burundi, Central Africa, died of a novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) in Paris, France. 71 years old.

AFP news agency reported on the 18th (local time) that a relative of former President Buyoya said, “Former President Buyoya died last night in Paris. He had Corona 19.” This relative said, “The deceased was admitted to a hospital in Bamako (the capital of Mali) last Wednesday (9th) and relied on an oxygen ventilator.” When he died,” he said.

Born in 1949 to a poor farmhouse in Lutobu, Burundi, former President Buyoya is of minority Tutsi origin. He graduated from the Belgian Military Academy in 75, and took power in a bloody coup in 87 at the age of 38. It tried to resolve tribal conflicts by involving both the Tutsi and Hutu in the formation of the cabinet, and introduced a multi-party system for the first time in Burundi’s history.

In the presidential election in 1993, he was defeated severely by the majority Hutu opposition candidate Melsiorddaye. However, when former President Dadaye was killed four months after taking office, Burundi fell into a tribal civil war for years. Another Hutu native, Silvestre Ntibantunga, took power, but in 1996, after a military coup led by the Tutsi, Buyoya regained power.

In May 2003, Domitien, a Hutu native, transferred power to Daizey’s vice president. Since 2012, he has been envoy for the African Union (AU) in the region of Mali and Sahel. He has argued against the results of the assassination trial as a “political decision.”
