Since its launch, “Installation” has received a lot of applause. After only 4 days of airing, the real-time ratings of the show’s Kuyun jumped by 2% and remained high. The Douban score of 8.3 makes this urban emotional drama focusing on small characters a hit at the end of this year. In addition to the lively and meticulous performances of the actors, what are the reasons why this civilian drama is well received?
Installation work is hard and tiring
The 47-year-old Diao Dashun (Zhang Jiayi) is a “stage installer”. Before the official performance, the stage outfitting, lighting, and setting props are all completed by the stage installer. Shunzi and his team believe that they are doing “work that is tied to art.”
Xiaojin, who once served as the screenwriter of the Beijing People’s Art Theater, told the Yangcheng Evening News reporter that two or three days before the performance, the workers began to install the stage in the theater. “The actors are talking to the lines below. The workers install lights and sets on the stage. No one cares what the actors are doing.” Xiaojin said that even if a well-known actor came, the stage workers still worked on their own and would not come. You need to sign and ask for a group photo, “It’s not strange to be used to seeing it, and you have to work so much in a day.”
Xiao Jin said that after the installation of the stage is completed, the actors can perform a rehearsal equipped with lighting and set props, and then the formal performance will begin. At this time, the installation workers are relatively relaxed. They only need to prevent problems with the lighting and scenery, and do not have to work hard all the time. “But you have to concentrate, and you can’t leave, just to prevent something wrong.” Xiao Jin said.
“After the performance is over, if there are more performances after the show and the performance is to be continued, there is no need for workers to dismantle the stage.” Xiaojin told reporters that Beijing Renyi’s drama and stage performances usually perform more than a dozen times in a row. Dismantling is not intensive. Generally speaking, the installation workers are not the staff in the theater, they are often long-term cooperative outsourcing teams. “There is very little money to be a field worker during the performance, and the main income of the workers is to install the stage, and they don’t earn much, which is very hard.”
There is a scene in “Installing the Stage” in which Diao Dashun took the stage installation team to install a space rack for a performance in the square. The rack suddenly fell down. Seeing that it was about to hit Shunzi, Sanpi (played by Wang Yi) quickly blocked it with his arm. , Was fractured. Xiao Jin felt the same way about this. He said that when he was 19 years old, he had encountered a similar situation when he was dressing up a stage for the first time. At that time, he moved a heavy background board, and when he inadvertently rubbed it on his shoulder, he was suddenly bruised. But I have to endure the pain to finish the work.
Xiaojin said that the work of installing the stage is not only hard, but also risky: “In order to prevent collapse, the scenery is generally bulky and the lights are heavy. According to the different needs of each performance, the workers have to climb up and down to add or remove some lights. If you are not careful, you may be injured or even fall off.
The kind background impresses the audience
Everyone calls Diao Dashun “Shunzi”, but his life is not going well: he has no culture, and he often suffers from wage arrears when he does hard work of dressing up; the first wife thinks he is incapable and gives birth to his eldest daughter. Diao Juhua divorced him afterwards; the current wife, Cai Sufen, is gentle and virtuous, but has a sad past that he does not want to mention and a crazy suitor with three skins… Work is hard and tired, and life is all but smooth. Having fun in hardship, facing life positively, has always maintained the quality of kindness, simplicity, diligence and steadfastness, allowing the audience to see a kind of “deep-rooted flower and upward” power. Some viewers commented: “”Installation” reminds me of the “Happy Life of Zhang Damin” 20 years ago. It is not bloody, it only depicts the ordinary lives of ordinary people, but it is just as good-looking.”
In the process of adapting the original work into a TV series, “Installation” made many adjustments. For example, Diao Juhua is more selfish and mean in the novel, and the characters in the play have improved a lot. Using kindness as the basis for the characters is also a positive value that the play wants to convey to the audience. As Shun Zi often said in the play: “Life is to install the stage, I install the stage for you, you install the stage for me, and serve each other.”
Authentic flavors show characteristics
During the broadcast of the show, comments such as “I want to eat noodles when I filmed them” and “Shaanxi food looks so fragrant” often appeared in the barrage. In the initial plot to ask for a salary, the protagonist ate four meals one after another, and each time there are delicacies full of Shaanxi characteristics: Rou Jia Mo, scorched noodles, spicy soup, pot helmets, pantyhose noodles… At the same time, the close-up shots of these special delicacies show the food culture of the land of Sanqin, making the audience feel “coveted” while watching the drama.
Food is the priority for the people, and many film and television works will show some special food in them to attract audiences. In “Installing the Stage”, the local eating habits are cleverly embedded in the plot. The workers are busy to “eat one bite”. The scene of each meal not only fully demonstrates the character’s personality, but also plays a role in the plot. For example, Teacher Dou’s insistence on Guokui, Shunzi’s daughter Diao Juhua’s yearning for Cantonese cuisine and other foreign cuisines, and Director Tie’s domineering performance at the wine table all portray the characters’ characteristics.
