It is often said that the sequels are worse than the originals.
But with Paul McCartney, that old adage is no longer relevant.
The ex-Beatles just released the dazzling McCartney III.
Playlist: fifty years without the Beatles, their journey in twenty essential titles
A disc recorded 100% at home, like his distant predecessors, his first solo album McCartney (1970) or its second, released in 1980.
Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Like a trip on a rocket”
As he approaches his 80s, the musician remains above all an enthusiast, always in search of new sounds, or original ways of expressing himself. It was true as early as 1962 with the Beatles, it is still true today.
The voice is more fragile
From the first track, the quasi-instrumental Long Tailed Winter Bird, we are caught up in a unique universe, both recognizable and always renewed.
One day / One sound: Working Men’s Club (finally!) Takes over from rock
Admittedly, the voice is not as youthful as before. It is more weathered, serious and fragile. It is obvious on Pretty Boys, a pretty acoustic ritornello as he writes since the White album in 1968.
But that’s not a big deal. By showing himself in front of the public without make-up, without playing a character for the first time in his long career, Paul McCartney becomes all the more human. And continues to move and create while many artists of his generation have long since abdicated.
McCartney III, € 17 (CD) or € 31 (vinyl).
