The French Blood Establishment invites citizens to make a precious and useful gift by making an appointment for a blood donation in December and January to start the year off right.
The year 2020 was marked by an unprecedented pandemic, which once again demonstrated to us the spirit of solidarity of the French and in particular their commitment to blood donation, at a time when the reserves of blood products were dwindling in due to the health crisis. It is important that the mobilization continues during the holidays because patients always need transfusions in this very special period when everyone is refocusing more on their loved ones and family.
By offering an hour of their time to others, including only ten minutes for the collection stage, blood donors are making an essential and generous gesture, a gift that will help save three lives. 10,000 blood donations are needed every day to meet the needs of patients. Some have a blood disease, immune system disease, or cancer, requiring regular blood transfusions or blood-derived medications. Others have a more occasional but vital need (haemorrhages during childbirth, surgery, victims of accidents, etc.).
The challenge of meeting the needs of all patients remains a daily challenge. The level of collection from blood collections must be regular and constant to ensure self-sufficiency because the shelf life of blood products is limited: 7 days for platelets, 42 days for red blood cells.
